Yolande Ramsay for Curtains Up
Toronto’s comedy troupe Sex T-Rex brings a hilarious parody of post-apocalyptic movies and TV shows with “Wasteland”. This very entertaining show features mutants, car chases (!), a talking dog, and naturally, 80’s music.
“Wasteland” is a mash-up-and-send-up of the “Mad Max” franchise, “The Walking Dead”, and road movies. The show highlights the tropes of post-disaster action epics with light-hearted comedy and an engaging story. In this action packed tale, a janitor escapes a gruesome compound that was established many years after a world-wide catastrophe. Accompanied by a talking dog, he sets out to locate a radio broadcast that seems to promise a better place to live and play cool 80’s music. But first he must survive a megalomaniacal ruler, several car and motorcycle chases, and hordes of mutants. The results are electric, hysterical, and wildly creative.
The show uses shadow images and simple props to create the vast and messy world that is the typical setting for these stories. The car chase sequences are brilliant, acrobatic performances that hit every action film cliché. The costume styles bring to mind the films of the 80’s which complement the music. The five member cast use the small theatre space with full effect and fluid scene changes.
“Wasteland” is a fun ride that never slows down.
